QUALITY ASSURANCE IN SCHOOLS AND
COLLEGES
All the schools and universities in the BCTT
Coursefinder 2002 are either accredited by the British
Council or have been inspected under other further education and higher
education schemes. This means that the organisations meet agreed quality
standards and have been inspected at regular intervals.
TEACHING & LEARNING
British Council inspections take place when the institution is busy, and the inspectors
observe classes of all the teachers. They check that the teachers are using up-to-date methods and materials, that the students know what they are supposed to be learning and how, and that learning is actually taking place.
WELFARE & ACCOMMODATION
The British Council inspectors ensure that the school realises how difficult it can be to come and study in a foreign country. They look at information and support for students, and procedures for dealing with emergencies. If the school offers accommodation, the inspectors visit it, and check that it is inspected regularly by the school and that student complaints are acted upon promptly.
PREMISES & RESOURCES
Buildings and classrooms are checked by British Council inspectors, They have to be safe, and suitable for teaching. Accredited schools and colleges offer a range of resources - from the fairly simple to computers and self-access centres. The inspectors check whether these resources are right for teaching English, and whether the organisation really offers the resources it claims in its publicity.
COMPLAINTS
Occasionally, students (including teachers) have problems on their course, which they
can't resolve with the school or college. lf you have a complaint about an accredited organisation,
ARELS, BASELT and the British Council will help you find a solution. These three organistions work together
to set standards for English language teaching organisations in Britain and to offer students coming to Britain a range of quality EFL courses to choose from.
TEACHER TRAINING COURSES
The accreditation scheme was only recently extended (1998) to cover these courses. Courses leading to a teaching qualification remain excluded.
The British Council is an official body with headquarters at 10, Spring Gardens, London SW1.
BC Teacher Training is a private organisation, promoting teacher training courses world- wide through The BCTT Coursefinder. This has no connection with the "English in Britain" publication distributed by the British Council.
